Elliot Roscan

Been wanting to do some painting again for a while now, just haven't had the chance really since Christmas what with one thing and another (those things being primarily work and Mass Effect 3 )

So anyway, been wanting to try and do another pose of Elliot (from my current writing project Harlem's Deck) for a while. His styling is influenced quite heavily by DMC (to the point where I've been debating with myself on and off whether I should simply label the story as DMC fan fic*). The composition of the piece comes from a couple of earlier efforts of mine: fav.me/d7hy3by and fav.me/d7ebquh

I'm sort of intending to use this as the cover when I eventually publish Harlem's Deck as a complete piece. For those interested in the technical specs here, I started out with a pencil sketch, then painted in the black and red. Next came the pencil crayon highlights (and the flecks of yellow paint) before I went over the whole thing with a black fine liner to pick out the detail.

*Worth mentioning Harlem's Deck actually started out life as me thinking about the metaphysics behind the latest edition of DMC (the prequel reboot that so many people seem to hate, but I adore) and how they might pan out in a story (basically, I challenged myself to come up with a working framework for the powers envisaged in the game). I guess it's therefore inevitable that the result shares a lot with it's inspiration. Be interested to know if anyone has any strong thoughts one way or the other on the subject.

All I'll say on the subject myself is: Elliot Roscan is by no means the first to wear a long coat and wield a sword (we can say Aragon, Cloud Strife, Ringil Eskiath, and Dante and his brother Vergil, to name but  a few) and he most definitely will not be the last. I like to think I've brought my own flair to what has become a bit of an archetype of modern fantasy.
